Tourette Syndrome Association - Washington State Chapter Lending Library

The Washington State Chapter has a terrific Lending Library full of helpful and informative resources on Tourette Syndrome. It consists of videotapes, audiotapes/CDs, books, magazines and presentation materials. Some of the tapes are TSA produced, others are tapes of past mini-conferences or chapter meetings. Nationally televised shows on TS and OCD are also on tape.

The materials are available for sale at the prices listed OR TSA members can check out items for a two month period. Contact our Librarian, Sue Bream at (206) 283-0575 for more information.

  • "Hope Clinic," - produced by Hope Clinic of Bellevue, promotional video explaining the work of Hope Clinic. They do auditory and visual testing and therapy of children and adults when learning or attention problems are present. They deal with sensory dysfunction issues. Approx. 10 min., 2000. $10
  • Oprah Winfrey show - segment interviewing Gwyn Rubio, author of "Icy Sparks," an Oprah book of the month selection which deals with a girl growing up with TS in the rural south. Segment also profiles a number of children and adults with TS. Approx. 1 hour, 2001. $10
  • TSA-WA Educational Conference - tape of our Feb. 24, 2001 conference featuring Dr. Larry Burd of the University of North Dakota, Dr. Diane Findley of the Yale Child Study Center and Susan Fake, a positive behavioral support consultant. Presentations included "The ABC's of TS, ADD, OCD and Associated Disorders," "School-Based Strategies for Children with TS and Related Disorders" and "Positive Behavioral Support: A New Approach."   • After the Diagnosis ... The Next Steps - National TSA, Inc., Produced expressly for individuals and families who have received a new diagnosis of TS. This video was developed to help calify what TS is, to offer encouragement, and to dispel misperceptions about having TS. Features several families in excerpts from the Family Life With TS A Six-Part Series who recount their own experiences as well as comments from medical experts. Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. 35 mins.
  • The Complexities of TS Treatment: A Physicians' Roundtable - National TSA, Inc. Targeted to counselors, social workers, educators, psychologists and families, this video features expert physicians, allied professionals and several families summarizing key issues that can arise when counseling families with TS. Includes valuable insights from the vantage point of those who have TS and those who seek to help them. 15 mins.

  • "Behavior Management," presentation by Ross Greene at the TSA National Conference, 11/4/00 on helping those with TS who suffer from rage attacks and other inappropriate behaviors. He works from the philosophy of "children will do better if they can." Bad behavior is not willful, but the result of frustration in not being able to handle a situation in which they don't have the appropriate skills. Emphasis is on helping the child learn to handle his frustration by providing him with the necessary skills as he is experiencing the emotion. (2 tapes, 2 ½ hrs) $30

  • "Latitudes," newsletter published by Association for Comprehensive NeuroTherapy, $30 A newsletter devoted to alternative therapies in the treatment of TS, OCD, ADHD and autism.
  • "The Educator's In-Service Program on Understanding Tourette Syndrome," national TSA, 1999 $75. A comprehensive presentation manual meant to be used to educate school personnel on TS and associated disorders. Includes a script for an in-service presentation, numerous transparencies for an overhead projector which go along with the script, hand-outs for the educators and two videos ("A Regular Kid, That's Me" and a video of clips which goes along with the presentation).
  • "The Complete IEP Guide: How to Advocate for Your Special Ed Child," by Lawrence M. Siegel, Nolo Publishers, 2001, $25 This comprehensive book will help you navigate through the maze of special ed regulations to ensure you are able to be a partner in the development of an IEP which meets your child's needs. Chapters include information on: special ed law; determining eligibility for special ed; assessments; writing goals and objectives; how to keep yourself organized; preparing for and attending IEP meetings; resolving disputes through due process; and filing a legal complaint. Templates of special ed forms and same letters for corresponding with school personnel are also included.
  • "Teaching Teens with ADD and ADHD: A Quick Reference Guide for Teachers and Parents," by Chris A. Zeigler Dendy, M.S., Woodbine House Publishers, 2000, $20 This book describes the neurologic basics of ADD & ADHD; academic and learning issues; executive function and organizational skills; the federal laws IDEA, Section 504 and ADA; medication issues; and classroom management and challenging behaviors. It has loads of practical, concrete suggestions for ways to modify classwork and homework to accommodate these student's special needs, and discusses how teaching strategies can affect behavior. In the appendix section, many blank forms are included which can visually aid the student in keeping track of his/her homework responsibilities and getting started with writing assignments.
